Hypothyroidism and hair loss?

I am an otherwise healthy 23 yr old who was diagnosed with and underactive thyroid a few months ago and have been taking meds for about 8 weeks now. My eybrows were thinning out on the edges and that what got me to go get my thyroid checked. However, i notice that pretty much all the hair (except facial) on my body pulls out rather easily with a slight pull (including my eyebrows and arm hair) I was just wondering if this could be cause by the medicine im taking because i never noticed this with my arm hairs until yesterday. Thanks in advance

Your body may have to take a few more weeks to normalize after the overdose. Hair will pull out like that from hyper or hypo thyroid. I wouldn't worry about it just yet, give it a few more weeks and have your TSH checked to see if levels have gotten back to normal. My TSH levels are normal but hair still pulls out quite a bit.

It could be but I think that maybe its not. I am also treated for this and my hair is half way down my back and I have thick eyebrows. I am a guy. I have never had a problem losing hair in all the years I have been treated. See your doctor and ask him/her what the problem is.

I was diagnosed with that at about your age too. I am now 32. Did you doc put you on any meds? The hair lose could be from that. When I found out I had it I freaked out a lil and read up on it as much as I could. Your body is running at a very slow pace so you want your diet to be easily digested but nutritios. Consider a multivitamin as that helped me a whole lot. I no longer take my thyroid meds but do control mine with my diet. Docs will tell you this is a big no no but I could not afford the meds and my major symptom of hypothyroidism was depression. Now when I feel a bout coming on I know my body needs something. The hormone in the meds can be found naturally in animal fat--the crispy edge on your pork chop or steak or in a pinch some bacon.

Please look up info on how your body functions and you will get a good understanding of what it going on inside of you.

For me, hair thinning was even more pronounced once I started taking the meds to help the underactive thyroid. Once your body has found the right dosage and is back to normal, the hair should return.
